Dean and Director (ag) Shridath Ramphal Centre

Professor Troy Lorde is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Director (ag.) of the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law and Services and Professor of Economics at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus. An economist specialising in international trade, tourism economics and the development challenges of small states, he has built a distinguished academic career grounded in rigorous empirical research and strategic policy engagement.

Professor Lorde holds a BSc in Economics and Accounting (First Class Honours) from UWI, an MA in Economics from York University (Canada), and a PhD from the University of Surrey (United Kingdom). His research examines international trade, tourism, services trade, competitiveness, and the structural vulnerabilities of small, open economies. He has authored more than 55 peer-reviewed publications, presented widely at regional and international conferences, and is ranked among the top economists in the Caribbean and Latin America in the RePEc database.

His work increasingly addresses issues central to the WTO agenda, including services sector development, export diversification and the participation of small states in global value chains. He has led or collaborated on several interdisciplinary research initiatives that link trade, resilience, and sustainable development—key concerns for the Caribbean region.

Alongside his academic contributions, Professor Lorde is active in national policy circles. He serves as Deputy Chair of the Agricultural Development Fund, as Deputy Chair of the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation, and is a member of the Minimum Wage Board. His leadership at UWI has strengthened research capacity, graduate training and engagement with government and international partners.
