“The New Rules on Digital Trade in Latin American Regional Trade Agreements”

While recent technological advances have allowed an increase in digital trade, this growth has occurred with a lack of clear and defined rules. This deficiency has become an issue for Latin American countries. With the multilateral trade regime impasse, more complex regional and bilateral agreements have emerged. The formulation of digital trade regulation raises many questions. In this article we deal with the new rules on digital trade in regional trade agreements recently negotiated by Latin American economies.

Unlocking Tunisia’s unexploited export potential"

The European Union (EU) has long been Tunisia’s leading trade partner. Bilateral trade increased sharply after Tunisia and the EU signed an Association Agreement in 1995 aimed at creating a free trade area for goods, excluding agricultural and fishery products. Between 2013 and 2017, four EU countries – France, Italy, Germany and Spain – received 60% of Tunisia’s exports. Main exports were textiles, machinery, transport equipment and extractives.

Regional Trade Agreements: Fall 2020

Students will analyze legal aspects of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) in their historical, economic and political contexts. The principal topics include: trade in goods, trade in services, trade remedies (subsidies and dumping), foreign investment regulation, trade & environment (with an emphasis on climate change), intellectual property rights, and dispute settlement. The foundation of the course will focus on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA & USMCA), and the course will compare NAFTA approaches to more recent developments in other RTAs, such as the CPTPP.

Emmanuel Orkoh obtains his PhD under the supervision of TRADE Members

Emmanuel Orkoh obtained his PhD under the supervision of TRADE members Prof Derick Blaauw (promoter) and Dr Carike Claassen (co-promoter) in May.
In his thesis titled ‘Essays on trade openness, wage, poverty and intra-household time allocation in Ghana’, Emmanuel analysed the interrelationships between trade, poverty, labour arket outcomes and household production, with a special focus on gender and spatial differences.

ITAM hosted SIEL Regional Conference: V BIENNIAL CONFERENCE OF THE LATIN AMERICAN NETWORK OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC LAW

ITAM hosted SIEL regional conference for Latin American International Economic Law Network on 14-15 October 2019. The conference theme was: “STEPS BACK IN THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC LAW ORDER: IMPACTS TO LATIN AMERICA”. Twelve panels, more than 45 speakers from 10 different countries, on issues such as gender and trade, regional integration, trade and technology, trade and health, and trade and investment. On the Blue Economy: Concepts and Recent Developments in reference to Sustainability and Climate Change

The focus of the lecture will be on the concept of the Blue Economy and other related concepts which are used globally; the contribution of the Blue Economy at global level in promoting growth and generating employment; Blue Economy as a paradigm shift; the essentials of Blue Economy; the issues involved in the Blue Economy such as the Measurement of the Blue Economy; Accounting of the natural capital; Ocean Acidification; health of the ocean and the optimization of the benefits from the ocean/marine resources.

STRATEGIC CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON REFORMING BILATERAL INVESTMENT TREATIES (BITs) IN KENYA

The objective of the consultative meeting was to raise awareness of key stakeholders on the expiry of the Kenya-France and Kenya-Switzerland bilateral investment treaties and the need to review the investment agreements. To identify the discuss areas for consideration in notifying the French and Swiss governments on Kenya's intent to renegotiate the investment treaties, and to garner stakeholders’ positions on the renegotiation of the Kenya-France and Kenya-Switzerland BITs for a prodevelopment country position.

The ASEAN Trade Dispute Settlement Mechanism

ASEAN was established as a political and security forum and it was only in 1977 that ASEAN started to focus on regional economic integration.
