Attended the National TBT Committee Meeting

The National TBT Committee meeting took place from the 1st to the 2nd August 2018 at the Hilton Hotel. The meeting first discussed the minutes of the last meeting and matters arising. There after an update of the EAC Regional TBT work plan followed by discussions and preparations of the response to the US/EU on EAC Alcoholic Beverages Standards. This was followed by a discussion on the report of June 2018 on WTO TBT meeting on Specific Trade Concerns and the Report of the 8th Triennial Review.

Attended 5th Inter-ministerial Committee Meeting on the Preparations for the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference

Kenya successfully hosted the 10th ministerial conference (MC 10) between 15th to 19th December 2015 in which 6 outcomes were realized as a result of the negotiations. These outcomes are in a form of a package comprising of a series of 6 (six) ministerial decisions on agriculture, cotton and issues related to Least-Developed Countries (LDCs), and attempts to give a road map on the future work of the WTO.

11th WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Buenos Aires

The Eleventh Ministerial Conference (MC11) took place from 10 to 13 December 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was chaired by Minister Susana Malcorra of Argentina. The Conference opened with the signing of a presidential declaration in support of the WTO. This was signed by President Macri of Argentina, President Temer of Brazil, President Cartes of Paraguay and President Vázquez of Uruguay as well as by representatives of Colombia, Guyana, Mexico, Peru and Suriname.

WTO Chairs Annual Conference held in Buenos Aires at Flasco

The WTO Chairs Annual Conference of 2017 was held in Buenos Aires Argentina and hosted by Prof. Valentina Delich. The Conference took stock of the work undertaken by the 19 active WTO Chairs in 2016-17, identified the main achievements and challenges encountered in the delivery of activities, and the future direction of the program. It also discussed research conducted by the WTO Chairs on trade and poverty, promoting connectivity and trade behind the headlines.

CETRAD Project Workshop on “R4D “Towards Food Sustainability”

CETRAD Project Workshop on R4d “Towards Food Sustainability” Project "From phase 1 to phase 2: Data integration, indicators, and Transformative Pilot Actions" took place in Sagana Getaway Resort, Makuyu - Murang from 19 – 23 March 2018. The workshop discussed food sustainability indicators, discussed different food systems and their sustainability, discussed ideas for transformative pilot Actions (TPAs) for Kenya and Ghana, and also discussed the concretization of food systems in order to evaluate and to implement TPAs in Kenya, Ghana and Zambia with other partners.

Dr. MWANGI, ISAAC WACHIRA, graduated with a PhD in Economics “Dynamics of Financial Inclusion and Welfare in Kenya"

This thesis aimed at developing both single product and composite measures of financial inclusion and to establish how it links to welfare and vulnerability to poverty in Kenya. This is motivated by the need to raise financial inclusion to the universal level even though the attainment of this goal is impaired by lack of an appropriate measure of financial inclusion.

Participación en el Concurso de Derecho de la Organización Mundial de Comercio MOOT COURT

AUWCL students participate annually in the World Trade Organization (WTO) Moot Court competition sponsored by the European Law Students Association (ELSA) in collaboration with the WTO. The ELSA Moot Court Competition (EMC2) is a simulated hearing of the Dispute Settlement System of the World Trade Organization. The competition was open to teams from around the globe, giving them the opportunity to present their legal skills and knowledge of WTO law in front of WTO and trade law experts.
