World Trade Law Course

This course focussed on the laws, principles, functioning and jurisprudence of World Trade Law. Students looked at the principles of multilateral and bilateral trade and engaged with the practice of international trade law with the help of current jurisprudence and hypothetical dispute scenarios. The students received an appreciation of the purpose and functions of the WTO and be familiar with its principal rules, impact and jurisprudence.

Using Dispute Settlement Partnerships for Capacity-Building: Bangladesh’s Triumphant Experience at WTO DSU

World Trade Organisation grants rights to its Members, and WTO Dispute Settlement Understanding provides a rule-oriented consultative and judicial mechanism to protect these rights in cases of WTO-incompatible trade infringements. However, the DSU participation benefits come at a cost. These costs are acutely formidable for least developing countries which have a small market size and trading stakes. No LDC has ever filed a WTO compliant, with the only exception of India-Battery dispute filed by Bangladesh against India.

Paper Presentation: Appellate Body Held Hostage: Is Judicial Activism at Fair Trial?

I presented this most recent article at the LSGL Academic Conference in the University of Stockholm, Stockholm. In my presentation, I argued why we need to rescue and strengthen the WTO dispute settlement mechanism and the overall multilateral trading system. This paper will soon be published in the Journal of World Trade (53.2) 2019

From NAFTA to USMCA: Two’s Company, Three’s a Crowd

The renegotiation of NAFTA was surrounded by a dramatic atmosphere, just as Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland predicted. The negotiations took place against a backdrop of unilateral trade measures, President Trump’s mercantilist approach to trade policy, and the United States’ specified preference for bilateral trade deals. This article argues that, for the most part, economic, political and cultural relations in the NAFTA countries are bilateral in nature, but with important trilateral production chains in specific sectors, most notably in the automotive sector.

Electronic newsletter is underway to disseminate information to various stakeholders and promote the RCITA’s activities.

TV and newspaper interviews held with Turkish media

The Chair holder has had various appearances on Bloomberg HT TV Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6yl50YJSpveLPOIDELBqKA) in relation to recent developments in international trade. This Youtube channel will soon be accessible via The WCP website. The interviews held with major Turkish media outlets have considerably increased the visibility of the WTO Chair at Istanbul Bilgi University. Moreover, more postgraduate students started expressing interest in writing their dissertation on WTO related topics.
