Has the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations impacted on tourism flows of member countries?

Purpose – Using panel data for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) member states, the present study explored the role of RCEP negotiations on tourism development.
Design/methodology/approach –Adynamic econometric model, namely the panel autoregressive dynamic lag model (PARDL) has been used. To test for panel causality, Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality tests were used.

An Analysis of Eco-Tourism and Its Potential: Case Study of Small Island Developing States

The contribution of the tourism sector towards the development of host nations is undeniable in that it provides several benefits such as creation of employment, generation of added value and tax revenue, and boosting of inward foreign direct investment. Yet, tourism does also have negative environmental, economic and socio-cultural effects and it is also true that tourism can have a negative impact on the physical environment, economic, and socio-cultural landscape of host nations. This is particularly true for the case of SIDS.

Determinants of Tourism SMEs' Performance in Mauritius

This study develops and tests a structural model that incorporates the determinants of SME financial performance in Mauritius. Data were collected from 384 tourism SME owners using a structured questionnaire. The results indicate that managerial capability has a significant positive effect on SME performance and is in turn influenced by managers’ autonomy and competence. The study does find a significant relationship between innovation capability and SME performance.

Minimising Perceived Travel Risk in the Aftermath of the COVID-19 Pandemic to Boost Travel and Tourism

This study empirically confirms expected impact of COVID-19 related perceived travel risk on the likelihood of tourists to visit a destination. It then aims at identifying the key predictors of perceived travel risk in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Immediate Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Tourism in Mauritius

This study assesses the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourist arrivals for Mauritius. It provides interesting COVID-19 and tourism statistics for Mauritius in the first place, and preliminary analysis of the monthly time series data (tourist arrivals) confirmed that the series departed from their original trends after the outbreak of COVID-19: observed values were lower than those predicted by the selected optimal forecast model.

Mauritius: A successful Small Island Developing State

The economic upturn and performance of Mauritius is a far cry from predictions made in the 1960s. The island’s remarkable economic performance since the 1980s can been attributed to a multitude of factors instrumental to the success of the economy, including structural reforms, outward looking export orientated strategies, diversification in the manufacturing, tourism and financial services sectors amongst others, sound economic governance and institutions, and significant investment in human capital.

Tourism and Economic Growth: A Meta-regression Analysis

Numerous studies have focused on delineating the relationship between tourism and economic growth. In this article, we present the results of a rigorous meta-regression analysis based on 545 estimates drawn from 113 studies that empirically tested the tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLGH). The results suggest the presence of publication bias in the literature on this topic, where the majority of studies report positive and statistically significant estimates.

Climate Change and Trade Governance: Implications for the Travel and Tourism Sector in SIDS and the Caribbean

The Public Forum is the WTO’s largest annual outreach event, which provides a platform for participants to discuss the latest developments in world trade and to propose ways of enhancing the multilateral trading system. This paper explores the evolving intersection between climate change policies and trade governance with emphasis on the issues for the travel and tourism industry based on the recognition that it is not sufficient to cope solely with the challenges of environmental change.
