The Creative Economy and Heritage Tourism in the Caribbean

The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, combining both tangible and intangible cultural elements, is an active expression of cultural vibrancy and vehicle of cultural sustainability within the country, the region, and in the Caribbean diaspora internationally and an international tourism attraction. This chapter explores the way it has developed and spread and identifies the ways in which the synergies between the creative and tourism sectors are being exploited, critical success factors, best practices, and pitfalls.

Climate Impact and Action: The Travel and Tourism Industry in the Caribbean and Small Island Developing States

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like those in the Caribbean region are doubly jeopardized by climate change. They are not major emitters of greenhouse gases, but are amongst the most impacted by the ecological and economic fallout associated with climate change. SIDS are also highly trade and tourism-dependent economies and are therefore very vulnerable to the indirect policy impact from border carbon adjustment measures that would affect international travel and tourism.

Destination Satisfaction and Revisit Intention of Tourists: Does the Quality of Airport Services Matter?

This study focuses on the link between tourists’ satisfaction with the quality of airport services at a destination and their intention to revisit. The influence of tourists’ overall satisfaction with a destination on their behavioral intentions has been well established both at theoretical and empirical levels; however, the particular role of satisfaction with airport services has been so far largely neglected.

Investigating the impact of climate change on the tourism sector: Evidence from a sample of Island Economies

Although it is a widely accepted fact that climate change can negatively impact on tourism demand and affect the economies at the socio-economic level, empirical studies on the climate change tourism development nexus has been quite scant, especially for the case of island economies that are heavily dependent on tourism. This study aims to supplement the literature on climate change and tourism by empirically assessing the relationship between climate change and tourist arrivals for the case of 18 small island developing states over the period from 1989 to 2016.

Analysing the impact of tourism foreign direct investment on economic growth: Evidence from a small island developing state

The present study attempts to address the important question of whether foreign direct investment (FDI) flowing into the tourism sector has served to enhance economic growth in Mauritius for the period 1984–2014. Using a dynamic vector error correction model, and catering for dynamism, the results show that tourism FDI has indeed contributed to fostering economic growth; albeit the magnitude of the coefficient being relatively smaller than FDI in the non-tourism sector.

Air access liberalisation, marketing promotion and tourism trade

The objective of the present study is two-fold. Firstly, to assess the impact of air access liberalization on tourism demand for Mauritius and secondly to analyze the dual impact of the interplay between air access liberalization and marketing promotion efforts on tourism demand. Using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag model, the results suggest that air access liberalization is an important ingredient, albeit to a lesser extent as compared to other classical explanatory variables, of tourism demand.

Partial Least Square Structural Equation modeling (PLS SEM) Workshop

This workshop is designed to look at the stages of research question development and theorizing together with the subsequent methodological implementation using the multivariate analysis method PLS-SEM in business and management research. The learning objectives are to (1) contribute to theory by establishing a useful PLS path model, (2) have an in-depth methodological appreciation of the PLSSEM approach (the nature of causal modelling, analytical objectives, some statistics), (3) being able to evaluate measurement results, and (4) understand complementary analytical techniques.
