Motlamelle Anthony Kapa

Motlamelle Anthony Kapa obtained a PhD in Politics from Rhodes University, South Africa (2011). He joined the NUL in 2002, as a Teaching Assistant and rose to his current rank of Associate Professor. He teaches politics of southern Africa, international political economy, international relations, social science research methods, and supervises research projects. He was the Head of Department of Political & Administrative Studies (PAS) (June 2011 - December 2017) and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (January 2017 - December 2019).  He served on several management committees of the University, including the Joint Committee of Council and Senate for the recruitment of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Bursar and Librarian. He has been a Part-Time Chairperson of the Lesotho Law Reform Commission (February 2018 - January 2020); a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Development Management (IDM) (May 2018 – to date); the National Reforms Authority (NRA) (February 2020 - to date); and the NUL/Metropolitan Research Chair in Pension Law Advisory Committee (May 2021 - to date). He conducts research and publishes widely in the areas of elections and conflict; political parties and coalitions; civil society and democratisation; policy analysis; traditional leadership and local governance. His other professional activities include: providing consultancy services on general governance issues in Lesotho for the Government of Lesotho, local and international organisations; briefing international election observer missions during elections since 2007; providing community service to local civil society organisations; serving as external examiner for PhD theses and Master’s dissertations for the University of South Africa; University of Cape Town; University of Johannesburg; University of North West; and University of Botswana. He served as a Chair Panel of Experts for the review committees for undergraduate and post graduate programmes for the University of Namibia and Namibia University of Science and Technology.
