Türkiye - 26 February 2018

Trade topics: International Trade Law, International Trading System

WTO Chair holder took part in the Conference as a speaker at the “Jean Monnet Conference on the Legal Implications of Trade Liberalization under SAAs and CEFTA” at the
University of Belgrade on 26 February 2018. The Chair holder gave a talk on her paper "How to Modernize Turkey’s 20 Years Old Customs Union with the EU? Stocktaking, Challenges and Opportunities". The EU-Turkey Customs Union (CU) is now 22 years old and has become outdated and almost non-operational considering more ambitious free trade agreements that the European Union (EU) has concluded or is currently negotiating with other trade partners. The paper assesses how well the CU has functioned and analyses options for potential improvement, including a greater commercial framework that builds on the existing CU and a potential new trade agreement that may replace the CU.
