International economic theory states that a country should specialize in the production of goods and services that it can produce at a lower relative opportunity cost and import those goods and services that it can produce at a higher relative opportunity cost. It will also produce and offer for export those goods that it can produce with its most abundant factor. This has led most low income countries to specialize in commodity and primary products based on their resource endowments.

The Impact of Exchange Rate Shocks on Trade in Times of Uncertainties: Evidence from Three Oil-Importing Countries in MENA

This article is published in Statéco n° 113/2019. On the basis of a monthly data relating to trade flows, nominal exchange rates and other economic variables and a VAR model framework, some impulse-response functions (IRFs) are estimated for three Oil-Importing Countries (OICs) of the MENA region. These IRFs were estimated for two sub-periods notably the periods of political transition in these countries that were characterized by high degrees of uncertainty.

Threshold Effect of Globalization on Democracy: the Role of Demography, Journal of the Knowledge Economy

This article is published in the Journal of the Knowledge Economy. The literature presents conflicting expectations about the effect of globalization on democracy. One view expects globalization to enhance democracy, a second argues that globalization obstructs democracy; a third argues that it does not necessarily affect democracy. In this paper, we consider the threshold effect approach to reconcile these different results. We study the role of demography in the determination of the relationship between globalization and democracy.

Remittance flows to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reached $466 billion in 2017, an amount which is three times the size of official development and is larger than foreign direct investment (FDI) for all LMICs excluding China (World Bank 2018). In addition to sending money home, migrants also play a role in promoting trade and fostering investment between their country of origin and their host countries.

Emmanuel Orkoh obtained his PhD under the supervision of TRADE members Prof Derick Blaauw (promoter) and Dr Carike Claassen (co-promoter) in May.
In his thesis titled ‘Essays on trade openness, wage, poverty and intra-household time allocation in Ghana’, Emmanuel analysed the interrelationships between trade, poverty, labour arket outcomes and household production, with a special focus on gender and spatial differences.

ITAM hosted SIEL Regional Conference: V BIENNIAL CONFERENCE OF THE LATIN AMERICAN NETWORK OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC LAW

ITAM hosted SIEL regional conference for Latin American International Economic Law Network on 14-15 October 2019. The conference theme was: “STEPS BACK IN THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC LAW ORDER: IMPACTS TO LATIN AMERICA”. Twelve panels, more than 45 speakers from 10 different countries, on issues such as gender and trade, regional integration, trade and technology, trade and health, and trade and investment. And what are the implications for trade policy, especially in developing countries?
