Global Trade Dialogue: the problem as we see it, the responses as we imagine them

The WTO, and more generally the rules-based trading system, is under scrutiny. Concerns have arisen about the role of trade, globalization more generally, and technological change in the loss of manufacturing jobs in industrial countries and increased job insecurity. As some countries turn more inward, there are likely to be important implications for international co-operation and for the multilateral trading system in particular.On 5 December, academics and trade experts from Argentina, the Host Country, and other WTO Members debated several questions.

Presentation of NI SI NI NO NI BLANCO NI NEGRO

On September 11, 2018, within the XII National Congress on Democracy and the IV International Congress on Democracy organized by the National University of Rosario (NUR), School of Political Science, the WTO Chair at FLACSO presented its publication “Ni si, ni no ni blanco ni negro”. Professor Valentina Delich, PHD (c) Raul Tempesta and Prof. Julieta Zelicovich, contributors to the publication, presented and discussed around the present and future of the WTO.

Academic Run Up to the M11 Project

The Project was elaborated and implemented by the WTO Chair at Buenos Aires with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With a view towards the WTO Ministerial Conference hold in Buenos Aires in December 2017, the WTO Chair proposed in March 2017 to organize at least two meetings gathering trade academics from the region. The main idea was to generate a space of exchange of ideas and debate on occasion of the MC11. The final objective, to produce a piece containing short reflections of Latin American trade scholars around the present and future of trade.

Towards Food Sustainability: Impact of Economic Regimes on Food Systems in Kenya

This study sought to investigate the prevailing trade conditions in order to understand the extent to which the current food systems have been shaped by Kenya’s trade policy and the extent to which Kenya’s trade policy is embedded in or restricted by international commitments. It also sought to analyze Kenya’s agricultural policy in order to understand the extent to which the Kenya Government is involved in the food processing industry.

TRAINING MANAGEMENT AND DELIVERY: TRAINING APPROACHES, PARTICIPATORY METHODOLOGIES AND COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES

The work involved developing pedagogical materials that will be used in training of Trainers (TOT). It involved developing training material and delivery of the actual training of trainers. The target trainees for all ToTs would be the national trainers, i.e. those identified by the three project countries (Uganda, Rwanda and DRC) who will be responsible for delivering trainings at national level on the lines of the courses received by COMESA. The TOTs would be target trainees who included traders and border officials in each country and other stakeholders identified at national level.

Kenya: Assessment of access to government public procurement opportunities for women, youth and persons with disabilities

This study sought to Investigate the extent of participation of beneficiaries (women and youth) in accessing the government procurement opportunities in terms of volume and value of government tenders awarded to women owned, youth and PWD owned businesses; Identify existing barriers/challenges that prevent Youth, Women and PWDs from utilizing AGPO opportunities fully including assessing the level of awareness among AGPO target groups; Identify barriers/ challenges for procuring entities (PE) in implementing AGPO and make recommendations of how to strengthen the existing AGPO monitoring/repo

The Intervening Influence of Economic Growth on Fiscal Policy Stance and Public Expenditure in Kenya

This paper investigates the intervening influence of economic growth on the relationship between fiscal policy stance and public expenditure in Kenya from 1964 to 2015 using a Vector Error Correction Model. The results indicate that economic growth has an intervening influence on the relationship between fiscal policy stance and public expenditure in Kenya.
