Research on the Impact of Digital Trade Rule Networks on Manufacturing Global Value Chain Positioning

Amidst an increasingly complex global economic landscape, the rapid expansion of digital trade has emerged as a vital growth engine for nations worldwide while simultaneously disrupting traditional international trade frameworks. Major developed economies are actively constructing digital trade governance systems through regional trade agreements, where proliferating digital-focused RTAs with expanding coverage have collectively formed an interconnected digital trade rule network.

Este artículo explora cómo la desglobalización y la fragmentación del comercio están reconfigurando los patrones de integración regional y los flujos de las cadenas de valor globales. Empleando un enfoque de métodos mixtos, combina análisis históricos, estudios de casos y datos económicos para examinar los impulsores y las consecuencias de estos cambios.

Trade facilitation in global value chains: Assessing the role of maritime connectivity and trading across borders

This paper examines the impact of trade facilitation factors on trade flows, with a particular focus on Global Value Chains (GVCs) in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Using the structural gravity model of international and intra-national trade and data covering the period from 2006 to 2018, we analyze the influence of maritime connectivity and cross-border trade-facilitation factors on trade in final and intermediate goods. Our findings indicate that both factors play pivotal roles in both agricultural and manufacturing subsectors’ trade.

Global value chains and firms’ environmental performance, published in World Development

This paper analyzes the link between joining global value chains (GVCs) and firms’ environmental performance. Based on new survey data for firms in countries in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and MENA, we use propensity score matching (PSM) to compare similar companies that differ in terms of GVC participation. Our results show that firms that enter GVCs perform better across several environmental indicators.

Global Value Chain Participation and Real Effective Exchange Rates: Insights from Tunisia

Global value chains in the age of internet: what opportunities for Africa?

This chapter analyses the impact of the internet on global value chains (GVCs) in Africa. We investigate the effect of internet adoption on forward participation and backward participation of African countries in GVCs. We conduct the estimations using country-level data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Eora GVC database and firm-level data from the World Bank’s Enterprise Survey. We test whether internet adoption facilitates the participation of Africa in GVCs at the country level and the firm level.

La question des chaines de valeur globales a pris une ampleur telle qu’une analyse scientifique et empirique de son impact est devenue prioritaire aussi bien dans les pays développés que dans les pays en voie de développement. En organisant cette table ronde, la Chaire de l’OMC à TBS désire établir un agenda de recherches théorique et empirique sur les Chaines Globales de Valeurs en Tunisie. La Chaire souhaite également que l’agenda de recherche lui permettra de participer au débat public sur les politiques commerciales sur ce sujet.
