The country has a very progressive constitution which promotes women economic empowerment. Health pandemics affect women and men differently, and they can make the existing gender inequalities much worse. COVID-19 is one such pandemic, which can have substantial gendered implications both during and in the post-pandemic world. Mainstreaming Gender in Free Trade Agreements

Working with ITC, I have prepared a new and the very first tool-kit to gauge gender responsiveness in trade agreements. The tool-kit is explained in the report I have prepared for ITC. The report also includes ten steps to mainstream gender in trade deals and model clauses for countries to adapt. These lessons are based on a research assessment of 73 selected free trade agreements in force among 25 Commonwealth countries.

The unprecedented economic crisis triggered by the outbreak of COVID-19 is already having dramatic effects on world trade and appears very likely to trigger lasting changes to the world trading system, regardless of how the next phase of 'opening up' from lock downs progresses. Against this background the Global Economy and Finance Programme at Chatham House and University of Sussex co-hostes a round table under the UK Trade Policy Observatory on 'What Will COVID-19 Mean for the Participation of Developing Countries in the Global Trading System in the Short and Long Run?'.

Measuring the Gender-Responsiveness of Free Trade Agreements: Using a Self-Evaluation Maturity Framework

In the recent years, we have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of free trade agreements (FTAs) with gender-related provisions. The key champions of this evolution include Canada, Chile, and the European Union. These countries have proposed a new paradigm, i.e., a paradigm where FTAs are considered vehicles to achieving the economic empowerment of women. This trend is spreading like a wild-fire to other parts of the world. More and more countries are expressing their interest in ensuring that their FTAs are gender-responsive and not simply gender-neutral or gender-blind in nature.
