Trade and Marine Environment Protection: Status and Perspective of International, Regional and National Laws
The International Workshop on Trade and Marine Environment Protection: Status and Perspective of International, Regional and National Laws was held on April 6–7, 2023, at the Foreign Trade University (FTU), Hanoi, and online via Zoom. Organized by FTU in collaboration with the University of Tours and University of Rennes 2 (France), and supported by the WTO Chairs Programme and the French Embassy in Vietnam, the event brought together legal scholars, policymakers, and practitioners from multiple countries.
The workshop addressed the intersection of international trade law and marine environmental protection, focusing on the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement, regional and national legal frameworks, and emerging challenges such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, climate change, and digital governance.
Structured into multiple sessions and sub-sessions, the program featured presentations on:
• The implementation and implications of the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.
• ASEAN and EU approaches to sustainable marine governance.
• National legal responses to IUU fishing, particularly in Vietnam.
• Climate-related marine protection measures, including offshore wind and solar energy projects.
• Legal strategies in trade and investment agreements for marine sustainability.
• The role of digital law in marine environmental governance.
The event concluded with discussions on enhancing legal cooperation and policy innovation to support sustainable development and marine conservation in the context of global trade.
