Prof David Luke, Extraordinary Professor at North-West University (NWU) and a member of the WTO-WCP team, has released his latest book, How Africa Eats, which provides a detailed analysis of Africa’s food systems, agricultural trade, and food security challenges. Drawing on decades of experience in trade policy and development, Prof Luke examines the linkages between food production, intra-African trade, and global markets, offering insights for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners.
Prof Luke is recognised as one of Africa’s leading experts on trade and development policy. He previously served as Coordinator of the African Trade Policy Centre at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), where he played a key role in shaping continental trade and agricultural policies. At NWU, he serves as an Extraordinary Professor and an active member of the WTO-WCP team, bringing international expertise into academic research, teaching, and mentorship.
How Africa Eats builds on Prof Luke’s extensive research on African trade and economic development, focusing on food security, agricultural value chains, and policy frameworks. The book examines regional food trade flows, the impact of global market shocks on African food systems, and strategies to strengthen resilience in the face of climate change and geopolitical uncertainty.
The publication reinforces the WTO-WCP Chair’s commitment to broadening public understanding of trade and development issues and fostering informed dialogue on Africa’s economic and food systems.
