Proactively apply and respond to trade remedies in international trade
On August 6, 2024, Foreign Trade University (FTU) hosted a scientific conference titled “Proactively Apply and Respond to Trade Remedies in International Trade” at the Vietnam-Japan Cooperation Center (VJCC), Hanoi, with online participation via Zoom. The event brought together policymakers, academics, industry experts, and representatives from government agencies to discuss Vietnam’s evolving approach to trade remedies in the context of global trade dynamics.
The conference opened with remarks from FTU leadership and Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, highlighting the strategic importance of trade defense tools in safeguarding national economic interests. The first session featured presentations on Vietnam’s current practices in trade remedy investigations, challenges in responding to foreign trade barriers, and case studies from the steel industry.
The second session was a roundtable discussion focusing on practical experiences in initiating and responding to trade remedy cases, both domestically and internationally. Speakers from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, academia, and the private sector shared insights into legal, procedural, and strategic aspects of trade defense, and proposed solutions to enhance Vietnam’s proactive engagement in this field.
The conference concluded with a call for stronger institutional coordination, capacity building, and enterprise awareness to effectively navigate the complexities of international trade remedies.
