Introductory Course on the WTO and its Dispute Settlement System at ISEN
Monday, October 14, 2024 to Friday, October 18, 2024
Introductory Course on the WTO and its Dispute Settlement System at ISEN took place in Buenos Aires from 14 to 18 October, 2024.
Requested by Argentina as a WTO national training activity, the event was held at the Instituto del Servicio Exterior de la Nación (ISEN), Argentina's Diplomatic Academy, in Buenos Aires, and it was an excellent opportunity to engage with first and second-year ISEN fellows, as well as officials from the International Economic Dispute Settlement Directorate (DISCO) and other departments of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
The event was initiated and organised in collaboration with Ambassador Carlos Sersale di Cerisano, Director of ISEN, Minister Adrián Daniel Serra, Director of DISCO, and Ambassador Gustavo Lunazzi, Permanent Representative of Argentina to the WTO.
The course included interactive sessions delivered remotely by colleagues from the WTO Secretariat on key ongoing negotiations, such as fisheries subsidies (João Nunes), agriculture (Ulla Kask), intellectual property and public health (Josefita Pardo de León), e-commerce (Antonia Carzaniga), and trade & cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (Lauro Locks). The Director of the WTO Legal Affairs Division, Jorge Castro, deliver an interesting talk alongside Minister Adrián Serra on the current negotiations regarding WTO dispute settlement.
Florencia Mastrorilli, representative of the Young Trade Leaders initiative, delivered a presentation on the relevance of the multilateral system today and its impact on developing countries.
The closing roundtable was especially enriching, thanks to the distinguished panellists: Professor Valentina Delich (WTO Chair, FLACSO Argentina), Valeria Raiteri (Director of Unfair Competition at the Ministry of Economy’s Undersecretariat for Foreign Trade), Ambassador José Luis Pérez Gabilondo (former President of the CNCE and Argentina's former candidate to the WTO Appellate Body), and Minister Adrián Serra, moderated by Ambassador Sersale di Cerisano.
There was an active engagement of the brilliant and enthusiastic audience throughout the five days of the course.
