WTO specialists in development issues participated in a workshop on 16-19 October entitled “Trade and Inclusive Economic Growth” at the University of Jordan organized under the WTO Chairs Programme.
The participants, who were mostly academics and government officials, learned about the relationship between trade and inclusive economic growth, the development aspects of the multilateral trading system, how trade needs to be more inclusive for women and micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) and the role of e-commerce in creating opportunities for inclusive growth. Participants showed a particular interest in the issue of trade and gender – on the role women play in the economy and how trade can be a force driving women's economic empowerment.
Prior to the workshop, the WTO specialists participated in an academic conference on the same topic and presented a paper on "the role of the multilateral trading system in fostering inclusive economic growth".
