Twenty-five participants from African countries attended a course on trade policy analysis in Dakar, Senegal, from 27 to 31 March 2017. The participants included trade economists involved in the formulation, analysis and implementation of trade policy as well as academics who are members of the WTO’s Chairs Programme.
The course was organized by the WTO in co-operation with the African Centre for Trade Policy (ATCP) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP). The training took place at IDEP's premises in Dakar.
The course aimed to enhance the participants' ability to undertake trade policy analysis, with a view to providing a better understanding of the technical tools traditionally used to assess trade policy impact.
In particular, it helped to strengthen participants' understanding of the capabilities and limitations of tools currently used for trade policy analysis. It improved the capacity of the trainees to use key data inputs for trade policy analysis and introduced the participants to gravity and computer general equilibrium (CGE) modelling techniques.
