International Economic Law / Law of the Global Economy
The contemporary global context is undergoing unprecedented transformation. International economic law is one of the principal languages through which these changes are accepted, enforced, or resisted. To that effect, the course provides an introduction to the field of international law that pertains to the regulation of international economic relations. It places particular emphasis on the institutions and sources that underpin this area of law, building on the fundamental legal concepts and tools that students have previously acquired in their public international law course.
The course will address two key areas: firstly, international norms that regulate factors of production (e.g. human resources and capital) and secondly, international rules governing international transactions in goods, services and capital. Accordingly, the course will be based on fundamental principles of international trade economics, with the objective of attaining comprehensive comprehension of the aforementioned regulatory system. Furthermore, consistent reference will be made to the historical context of the legal sources under analysis.
