WTO CHAIR IN PAKISTAN - LAHORE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS

The Multilateral Trading System course provides a foundational understanding of the global trade architecture, with a focus on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in shaping international trade policy. Designed at a basic level, the course equips participants with the knowledge and analytical tools necessary to engage in multilateral, regional, and bilateral trade negotiations and policy development.
The course is structured into four comprehensive modules. Module 1 introduces the evolution of the multilateral trading system, from GATT to the WTO, and explores its principles, structure, and exceptions. Module 2 delves into key WTO agreements, including those on import licensing, rules of origin, trade facilitation, agriculture, and the emerging Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), supported by recent academic and policy literature. Module 3 focuses on regional integration, examining the legal and economic frameworks of regional trade agreements (RTAs), including Pakistan’s participation in regional trading blocs. Module 4 covers the principles and processes of trade diplomacy, including negotiation strategies within the WTO framework.
By the end of the course, participants will have developed the capacity to understand and contribute to global trade policy discussions, assess the implications of international trade agreements, and actively participate in shaping trade strategies at national and international levels.
