The increasing indispensability of data is succinctly captured in the adage data is the new oil. As economies around the globe get digitised, it is imperative to understand the fundamentals of the digital economy and the effect it has on international trade. This includes the effect on cross-border and internal operations, the increase in global competition, the emergence of new formats and opportunities for businesses through digitization, and lacunae in global governance protocols on digital products and services. The session covered the domestic and international dimensions of data governance, and e-commerce, including the Joint Initiative on E-commerce at the WTO, and digital era policies.
