Discussions on "COVID-19 and its impact on women in International Trade"
Thursday, July 2, 2020
Discussions on "COVID-19 and its impact on women in International Trade" on 6 July organised by International Gender Champion Ambassador H.E Chad Blackman, OWIT - Organization of Women in International Trade Group and Women's Economic Imperative.
Panelists will highlight how specific tools and measures can help to overcome the obstacles and barriers to trade faced by women, also looking at how technology and e-commerce have impacted the economic empowerment of women faced with COVID-19 trade disruptions. The UN and WTO have led efforts to implement tech solutions for trade including contactless solutions, maximizing seamless connectivity and collaborative solutions on transport, trade and logistics operations. These solutions are expected to promote prosperity, enabling vulnerable women business enterprises across multiple national economies to recover better from COVID-19. However, the reality is that women in micro and smaller businesses are less likely to deploy these tech solutions, as they also struggle to optimize the benefits of online commerce.
The discussion will hear from WTO Mexcian Co-chair Dr. Amrita Bahri about new generation trade agreements which are effectively seeking to demolish these barriers and create a gender-responsive trade environment.
Key questions that will be addressed in the session include:
● What specific tools and measures should countries use to overcome the obstacles and barriers to trade faced by women?
● How have technology and ecommerce impacted the economic empowerment of women facing COVID-19 disruptions to trade?
