Comércio e Gênero: um novo tema na agenda internacional

In September 2015, the United Nations member states agreed on a new agenda on sustainable development that sets a range of gender related goals that shall be achieved by the international community in the following years. Among them, the women’s economic empowerment holds fundamental importance due to potential gains to economic growth and development of Nations. Researches show that women with their own income are more independent and less vulnerable. Also, women invest most of their revenue in their own community, helping to develop all society in the long run. The present study proposes to analyze trade and gender relations in initiatives adopted in the scope of the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). By stimulating competitiveness, the incorporation of new technologies and the creation of business and work positions, trade can have a catalytic effect on women’s economic empowerment. To that end, it is necessary to incorporate a gender lens to the trade policies, equalizing their impact on women and men.
