Legal Aspects of International Trade

This course is designed to introduce students to the legal system governing international economic transactions and international economic relations, particularly centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO), the most significant institution for international trade relations, and its constituent treaty parts such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The focus is on the international trade law and legal aspects of regional integration from historical and modern perspectives.

Legal Research Priorities in Climate Change

The Global Priorities Institute at Oxford University, inspired by the effective altruism movement, has created a research agenda to prioritize the research that has the potential to do the most good over the long term (https://globalprioritiesinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/gpi-researchag…). Similarly, our project seeks to identify Legal Research Priorities in concrete fields of law and regarding concrete issues in each field, based on objective criteria.

The course comprised discussions on the basic principles of multilateral trade and how to engage with the practice of international trade law with the help of current jurisprudence and hypothetical dispute scenarios. Taught at Stockholm University, as part of their LLM Summer Exchange Program.

The course focused on the laws, principles, functioning and jurisprudence of International Trade Law. Students discussed the principles of multilateral and bilateral trade and engage with the practice of international trade law with the help of current jurisprudence and hypothetical dispute scenarios. The students received an appreciation of the purpose and functions of the WTO and be familiar with its principal rules, impact and jurisprudence.

Course taught: Trade and investment in times of disruption, at 8th LSGL Summer School, HSE University

This course addressed the two main disruptive movements in international trade and investment law. First, we considered the critical proposals for review of the trade and investment liberal order. This movement is characterized by new topics to and forms for the regulation of the global trade and investment flows. The second movement of disruption is the most recent trend of protectionist measures amidst COVID-19, both to trade and investment flows. The purpose was to explore the clash of those two disruptive movements to the global economy.

The Mexican Front-of-Pack Labeling Reform: Is It Compatible with International Trade Law?

Mexico has by far the world’s highest death rate linked to obesity and other chronic diseases. As a response to the growing pandemic of obesity, Mexico has adopted a new compulsory front-of-pack labeling regulation for pre-packaged foods and non-alcoholic beverages. This article provides an assessment of the regulation’s consistency with international trade law and the arguments that might be invoked by either side in a hypothetical trade dispute on this matter.
