Multilateral Trading System 2
The Multilateral Trading System 2 course provides a foundational understanding of advanced topics within the global trade framework, with a particular focus on services trade, intellectual property rights, trade remedies, and dispute resolution under the World Trade Organization (WTO). Designed at a basic level, the course equips participants with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to engage with contemporary trade issues and legal instruments.
The course is organized into four key modules. Module 1 explores the growing significance of trade in services, the structure and implications of the WTO’s General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), and Pakistan’s potential in regional service trade, particularly with the GCC. Module 2 introduces the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), international IPR conventions, and Pakistan’s legal and institutional framework for IP protection. Module 3 covers trade remedy laws, including anti-dumping, subsidies and countervailing measures, and safeguards, providing insight into their application and relevance in global trade. Module 4 offers an overview of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, with a focus on Pakistan’s experience and the implications of trade facilitation agreements for domestic policy.
Through case studies, academic literature, and real-world examples, the course builds participants’ capacity to understand and contribute to trade negotiations, policy formulation, and legal compliance in the multilateral trading system.
