New course: CAPLP (Centre for Academic and Professional Language Practice)

South Africa - 21 November 2017

The second trial sessions of a new tailored short course in Academic Writing Skills for new Master’s and PhD students in Economics and International Trade took place in March/April 2017. The sessions were spread over four days:

16–17 March 2017
20–21 April 2017

with each session focusing on a component of the research process.

Prof Anmar Pretorius attended both 2X2 day writing workshops, first in the capacity of a supervisor and secondly as a subject-specific participant. During the workshops she offered the group some subject-specific context as well as practical examples drawn from her experience of writing in the broad field of economics.

For the Honours group, the CAPLP conducted three contact sessions in which students were given clear guidelines on how to write effectively and how to develop a strong literature review, as well as practical exercises to test their applied knowledge and skills.

The course was attended by seven Master’s students and one PhD student. This course is newly developed (adapted from an existing course offered by the CAPLP) and will be continuously assessed, upgraded and presented on an annual basis to all new Master’s and PhD students of the TRADE research entity.
