Economic foundations of trade and trade policy
This course, part of the MSc in International Trade Policy and Trade Law, provides a comprehensive foundation in the economic principles underpinning international trade and trade policy. Delivered through a blend of pre-session assignments, on-site lectures and exercises at the trapca/ESAMI campus in Arusha, Tanzania, and post-session evaluations, the course spans classical, neo-classical, and modern trade theories. It explores global trade patterns, comparative advantage, economies of scale, firm-level heterogeneity, and the political economy of trade policy, with a particular focus on African trade dynamics. Participants engage with theoretical models, empirical investigations, and policy instruments such as tariffs, subsidies, and non-tariff barriers. The course culminates in simulation exercises and examinations, equipping students with analytical tools to assess and influence trade policy in developing contexts.
