Bridging Policy and Practice in Regional Integration: The Case Study of the AfCFTA

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a historic opportunity, but its transformative potential hinges on bridging the divide between policy and practice. This concluding chapter critically examines the implementation of the AfCFTA across Africa by analysing the challenges, strengths, lessons learned, indigenous solutions, and policy recommendations from the country case studies reviewed in the book. Valuable insights from these analyses demonstrate that most countries across Africa face similar challenges; however, some countries have adopted sterling indigenous solutions to some of the challenges experienced in other countries. Hence, this chapter posits that there is a need for significant peer learning amongst the African countries for balanced growth and sustainable development. To fully realise the AfCFTA’s potential, this chapter recommends that African governments must strengthen legal and institutional frameworks, harmonise trade and customs procedures, and invest in trade-related infrastructure across member countries. Special attention should be given to supporting women, youth, and MSMEs through inclusive financing, training, and policy interventions. In addition, sustained political will, data-driven reforms, and integration of sustainable development principles are essential for aligning the AfCFTA with the Agenda 2063 goals.
